These make such a great snack and are great for people with dietary limitations and those on an Elimination Diet.  Plus, my kids love them.

I recommend using the Excalibur Food Dehydrator.  It's by far the best dehydrator I have ever used.  It dries your food evenly and I don't even have to turn my food (maybe the odd thing, but usually not).  We usually make apple chips, banana chips, beef jerky, fruit leather, dog treats, and I'm really looking forward to making crackers and beet and sweet potato chips.

This is the one that I have:

Here's how to make apple chips & Leather:

Apple Chips

  • About 10 apples (I like Royal Gala), peeled, cored, and cut to about 1/8" thick
  • Place evenly over the tray
  • Sprinkle with Cinnamon
  • Dry on the fruit setting for about 10-11 hours

Apple Leather - Super Easy

  • Put Apple Sauce (I prefer sugar free) in an oval on parchment paper or the special paraflexx ones that Excalibur supplies (that's what I use)
  • Spread the apple sauce so it's about 1/3" thick on the outside and 1/4" thick in the center (it dries faster on the outside, so it helps to make it thicker)
  • Sprinkle with Cinnamon (optional)
  • Dry on the fruit setting for about 18 hours
